The Solar Hijri calendar counts years from the Hijra — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE — but measures them by the sun rather than the moon. The year is divided into 12 months. The first six months (Hamal through Sunbula) each have 31 days, the next five (Mizan through Dalw) have 30 days, and the final month, Hut, has 29 days in a common year or 30 days in a leap year. The week in Afghanistan begins on Saturday (Shanbe) and ends on Friday (Juma), the day of rest. Because the calendar is tied to the equinox, Nowruz — the new year — always falls on or around March 21st in the Gregorian calendar, marking a national celebration of renewal across Afghanistan.
